Artist Radar: Mk.gee

When the song “You” first comes on, one might find themselves at the 20 second mark, wanting to start it over. On a second listen, you will find yourself wanting to do it again, and again, and again. The seamless transition from a grainy, 70’s psychedelic riff, into a full fledged cloud of warm, ocean filled synths, wah wah guitar licks and dreamy lyrics, will leave you with no choice but to be completely swept up. That’s the incredible diversity and talent of New Jersey native Mk.gee, a.k.a. Michael Grodon. 

A lifelong musician and songwriter, Gordon packed his bags and moved to California in 2015. This decision helped him open up his musical world and perspective on life. He attended the Thorton school of music at USC, and in a span of two years, started releasing music as Mk.Gee. In an interview with Ones To Watch, Gordon says, “I became infatuated by a lot of music and artists that I was never exposed to on the East Coast… I learned how to let everything inspire me…”. That willingness to be inspired comes through on every song he creates. 

His albums are like Christopher Nolan movies. He weaves twists and turns from song to song, that keep you on your toes and leave you craving more. Beyond this, he is able to create themes and narratives that resonate with pieces and memories of yourself, that you might not even be aware of. 

Grodon’s music exists in a freeform world, a world that many well established artists have spent their entire careers trying to find. Mk.gee effortlessly blends elements of jazz, rhythm & blues, funk, and soul, all culminating in a blessing for our ears that is both authentic and true. It is a rare time to have both of these characteristics as a musician.
